The other day I took the opportunity to take a Mercedes C Class out for a spin, and I wanted to share my impressions with you. The exact car I drove was a C220 Diesel Sport Model. I know that Diesel and Sport don’t tend to go together, so I was a little bit sceptical to start with. I will get into more of the specifics on the car in another article, but in my opinion the C Class is a perfectly decent car, which does a lot of things right, but nothing spectacularly.
The test drive took place at Mercedes World in Brooklands, which means that I got to drive the car around their handling circuit. I must say that this is the best place to take a test drive ever! There are rumble strips, braking zones, wet circles, as well as the track itself.
As for the car, it handled all of the things thrown at it quite adequately. I was very impressed with the various safety features, and there is no doubt that this car will look after you and your passengers very well. The ride on the sport model would be fine for regular driving, but there was a fair bit of body roll in the corners on the track. I suppose that is too be expected in a car that can run over the rumble strips without making you spill your coffee.
The 220 diesel engine was not really suited for an exciting track day, but as diesels go, this one was very quiet and certainly felt petrol like in most of the ways that counted. When you take the running costs into account, I think this engine would be a better choice than the 180 petrol, where you will get similar performance but much better fuel economy.
The looks of the car are also quite pleasing, even if they aren’t going to cause any supermodels to flag you down. It has plenty of room for 4 people, and a large boot..errrr…..to boot.
My smile factor for this car: 3
